My Amazing Catalogue


Annotated Catalogue

Television
Item 1 – Hollyoaks
I chose this on going soap because it shows the constantly changing trends within young women in the north of the UK. It’s a great media text which young students can relate to in every day situations. It represents women well in the way I want to show throughout my project.

Item 2  - The Hills
This type of programme show’s typical traits of young women but can be seen opposite to my other choice, hollyoaks. I chose it because of the differences which will make it clear to analyze the different representations of young women on television.

Books
Item 3 – An introduction to television studies, Jonathan Bignell, Routledge, 2004
An introduction to television studies. This book is very useful for introducing connotations television makes within the soap opera area I’m basing my project on. It helps explain different ideology’s whilst also detailing representations made throughout various texts.

Item 4 – Advanced studies in media, Joe Nicholas and John Price, Thomas Nelson and Sons LTD 1998. This book analyses how gender is represented in different texts and gives an insight to different ideologies created.

Item 5 – Interpreting audiences, Shaun Moores 1993. This helps me understand the way different producers approach audiences via different types of genre and texts. It also takes into fact cultural differences.

Item 6 – Media AS and A2 revision. Jacuine Bennett, Ken Hall 2008. The content of this book focuses on different case studies and ways of expanding ideas on representation of women.

Item 7 – Studying the media, 3rd edition, Tim Osulivan, Hodder Arnold 2003. This book puts into context the attitudes of gender and class.

The text found on this website analyzed the way beauty and body images are portrayed within the media. It shows how the bodies of women are everywhere and gives an insight on how the body image is used. I found it a good way to get an insight on representation of young women, and how they’re used in other texts such as advertisement whilst also reading the message which is sent across to the audience.

Item 9 – Media Knowall advanced - http://www.mediaknowall.com/as_alevel/alevel.php?pageID=gender This site explains different representations whilst taking into consideration how male dominated the media is and how representations have changed over time.

Item 11 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollyoaks Just like above, this website again shows background information on the media text I’m analyzing whilst giving me links to other useful resources which I can benefit from.

Item 12 – http://guardian.co.uk/media/reality-tv Gives different ideas around representation and connotations of social roles in gender. It’ll be very useful to help me with my research.

Item 13 – Cait Mcnamee, Media magazine December 2008
This article analyzes the gender roles in society of women represent in a similar text, which I am studying. It explains different ideologies made via program are similar to the ones I’m analyzing.
